Black Power: Education Ranks Top for Black Consumers

The 15th annual buying power of Black America report was released by Target Market News.

With this unique publication you’ll learn how much of black consumers’ $803 billion in income was spent on apparel, entertainment, food, beverages, toys, computers, cosmetics, automobiles, travel and dozens of other categories.

This report is being used by Proctor & Gamble, McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Walt Disney Co., Sears, IBM, Mercedes Benz, America Online, Quaker Oats, Pillsbury, Bank of America, Clear Channel, Ford Motor Co. and hundreds of other Fortune 1000 companies.

In 2008, Black America was equivalent to the world’s 17th largest economy. Here are some other figures on how African-Americans spent our money in 2008 (full chart can be seen here), and I’ve included the entire GDP figures in 2008 for some countries as a comparison:

  1. Education: $71 billion (Croatia: $69.3 billion)
  2. Food: $65.3 billion (Belarus: $60.3 billion)
  3. Cars & Trucks – New & Used: $31.5 billion (Kenya: $30.2 billion)
  4. Apparel Products & Services: $26.9 billion (Ethiopia: $25.7 billion)
  5. Health Care: $23.9 billion (Cameroon: $23.2 billion)
  6. Charitable Contributions: $11 billion (Cambodia: $11.2 billion)
  7. Travel, Transportation & Lodging: $6.4 billion (Nicaragua: $6.4 billion)
  8. Entertainment & Leisure: $2.8 billion (Togo: $2.9 billion)
  9. Books: $289 million (Tonga: $258 million)
